This is not only a tribute to winter and the opportunities it brings for outdoor activities and human connection, especially during childhood. It is also a subtle nod to religion, open to different interpretations depending on one’s own perspective.
The church in the background, with the children in the foreground, can be seen as a symbol of patriarchal protection over childhood. Or, from the opposite point of view, as a symbol of control and restrictions on personal freedom. A strip of text lying on the ground reinforces both interpretations.
God is all-encompassing, watching over you with love and offering protection. Or the Church is all-powerful, dictating what you can and cannot do.
The painting in the background is based on På isen bag byen. Fåborg (1901) by the Danish painter Peter Hansen.
